M - O - T - H - E - R

        "M" is for the million things she gave me,
        "O" means only that she's growing old,
        "T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
        "H" is for her heart of purest gold;
        "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
        "R" means right, and right she'll always be,
        Put them all together, they spell
        "MOTHER,"
        A word that means the world to me.

        Howard Johnson (c. 1915)

        My Mother

        Who ran to help me when I fell,
        And would some pretty story tell,
        Or kiss the place to make it well?
        My Mother.
        Ann Taylor

        Wonderful Mother

        God made a wonderful mother,
        A mother who never grows old;
        He made her smile of the sunshine,
        And He moulded her heart of pure gold;
        In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,
        In her cheeks fair roses you see;
        God made a wonderful mother,
        And He gave that dear mother to me.

        Pat O'Reilly

        Mother's Hands

        Dear gentle hands have stroked my hair
        And cooled my brow,
        Soft hands that pressed me close
        And seemed to know somehow
        Those fleeting moods and erring thoughts
        That cloud me day,
        Which quickly melt beneath their suffrage
        And pass away.
        No other balm for earthly pain
        Is half so sure,
        No sweet caress as filled with love
        Nor half so pure.
        No other soul so close akin that understands,
        No touch that brings such perfect peace as Mother's hands.

        A Picture Memory

        A picture memory brings to me;
        I look across the years and see
        Myself beside my mother's knee.
        I feel her gentle hand restrain
        My selfish moods, and know again
        A child's blind sense of wrong and pain.
        But wiser now, a man grey grown,
        My childhood's needs are better known.
        My mother's chastening love I own.

        John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)

        The Most Beautiful Name.. Mother..

        The most beautiful name in the world of words
        For a Mother is truly all things in one persona:
        The body that gives hers to breathe into you life
        The hand that rocks the cradle of sweet lullabye

        The eyes that watch over you every step of the way
        The heart that loves you in a way only she can
        The arms that hold you with tender firm grip
        The face that smiles with pride at her handiwork......

        The handkerchief that wipes away all mournful tears
        The bandage that covers a multitude of wounds
        The taxi cab that drives you to your field of dreams
        The lipstick that glosses you to a polished finish

        The needle and thread that sews together broken pieces
        The spice that flavors you with sugar sweet kisses......
        The nurturer that feeds her young ones with care
        The teacher that instills your manners and morality

        The protector that shelters you from harms way
        The mediator that negotiates your contract in life
        The rock that stands firmly your foundation is built upon
        The crusader of peace that guides the way to your shepherd......

        The most beautiful name in the world of words
        Is indeed the person that is called ...MOTHER...
